Lymphedema Therapy
Lymphedema is a chronic condition involving the accumulation of protein rich lymphatic fluid within the tissues. This leads to swelling, heaviness, reduced mobility, tissue firmness, and changes in skin texture. Lymphedema develops when the lymphatic system cannot adequately transport lymph due to structural damage, obstruction, or overload.
Clinical Causes of Lymphedema
Lymphedema can arise from multiple underlying factors, including:
Cancer related lymphatic disruption — surgery, radiation therapy, or lymph node removal
Breast cancer treatment — commonly affecting the arm, breast, chest wall, or upper torso
Trauma or injury that compromises lymphatic vessels
Genetic or congenital lymphatic abnormalities
Chronic venous insufficiency
Postsurgical edema following medical or cosmetic procedures
Post Cancer & Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema
Post cancer lymphedema is a well recognized complication when lymph nodes or lymphatic channels have been removed or damaged. Breast cancer survivors are at particularly high risk due to lymphatic pathway disruption in the axilla, chest, and breast regions. This may result in:
Arm swelling
Breast or chest wall edema
Reduced range of motion
Tissue firmness or fibrosis
Supportive Management
Supportive lymphatic work may help clients manage symptoms by assisting with:
Localized swelling reduction
Softening of fibrotic tissue
Enhanced lymphatic flow
Improved mobility and reduced heaviness
